52 - sweat

"You all right?"

"Yeah, just... give me a second... to die..." Bill sank heavily into a chair, tugging at the soaked t-shirt. "'In the good ol' summertime...' Feh."

Dani threw him a towel. "Thank God for air conditioning. At least when we're done, it'll be dark, and hopefully a little cooler."

"Maybe." He started drying himself off. "Could mean a hell of a storm, though."

He looked down at his damp, darkened clothes, disappointed.

"I'm going to hit the showers. B promised to drop off a Beloved corpse at the labs, and right now, I feel like he'll be the looker..."

54 - endless

So many worlds, so little time - that was the Crossroads. Lunch with mages? No problem. Party with cyborgs? Piece of cake.

But why did he return, time and again, to this mundane little world?

Unfortunately, what many people didn’t realize that they held equally myriad dangers - hellions that made Cthulu wake up in a cold sweat, beings of infinite beauty and equally infinite cruelty, and more than a fair share of human monsters. If you weren’t careful, you could be killed - if you were lucky.

For all its ghosts, Santa Monica was safe - and that’s what mattered.

55 - daydream

Jen lay in his arms, breathing quietly in sleep. It was barely past eleven, very much a first for them both, but neither of them felt like going out on the town. He smiled - he'd had no idea how lonely he'd been, and for so long...

As if she were the psychic, she woke up, pulling away to study his face. Moments later, she smiled, and pulled him into a kiss-

He yelped when Lamont tapped his shoulder. When his heart stopped exploding, he glared, but the billionaire vigilante only smiled.

"Jesus, don't you ever do anything loudly?"

56 - roasting marshmallows

Ellie toyed with her s'more. "Y'know, that was kinda..."

"Boring?" Bill munched thoughtfully on a graham cracker. "I see what you mean." The s'mores had been tasty enough, but making them had been... lacking.

"It's too bad we didn't use the barbecue grill. You think that'd work?"

"It would, but it's safe to say that I haven't inherited the grill gene."

"And you know this how?"

For once, he looked embarrassed. "You know how people keep saying that one day, you'll look back on everything you did today and laugh?"

"...I'll let you know if that day ever comes."

57 - couple at sunset

"Not a care in the world..."

"I wish."

"So what do you think about Jenna?"

"She's... changed."

"Haven't we all?"

"I know..."

"But you still care about her."

"Well, yeah, but..." He shook his head. "I can't."

They watched the sunlight fade away, until Lamont spoke.

"One of the last things the Tulku said was that I needed to stay in touch with my humanity, otherwise I'd forget why the Shadow is important to the world."

"So, I should date her?"

"That's up to her. But remembering that you cared brought you back, and will keep you from falling again..."

58 - kids playing by a fire hydrant

Lisa grinned. "Hit me."

Thornton nodded, and lowered his hands over the water. As it flowed up, he shifted them until they were palm to palm, the water floating between them. He moved it around him, adjusting as he went, until he sent it flowing to her.

She caught it, the familiar coolness running through her body, mirroring his gestures. They passed the sphere back and forth several times, the exercise as easy as breathing.

"Think fast!" Thornton sent the sphere flying, but her defense was equally simple, making it explode. He smiled, never prouder of his first student.

60 - firefly

Am I a monster?

You are my grandson, Thornton. If anyone's a monster-

He shuddered, cursed, tried not to think of curling horns and fangs in a too-small mouth as his body threatened to explode.

No - calm! Remember what Grandfather said - remember yourself, and use that to focus...

The moment passed, but damn if it didn't hurt. He wiped his forehead, shivering painfully as he sank onto a bench.

-it's your father.

Damn it, how was he supposed to live?!

A firefly, glowing and twirling, zipped down, decided he wasn't important, and darted onward.

And the moment passed.

61 - thermometer

"Ninety-nine point six." Bill sighed. "Looks like you're not going anywhere, kid."

Ellie flopped back onto the bed, a picture of teenage resentment.

"I don't believe it - I was fine yesterday!"

"At least it's just a cold."

"Yeah, but- Okay, why didn't you give me a shot for that?"

"Well, there are treatments out there, but they're really not pleasant."

"I know." He passed Bessie to her. "I'll call Eleanor, see if she feels like double-team babysitting..."

Next day...

"How...?" Dani shook her head in disbelief. "You're both sick?!"

"Don' blame me! Talg do liddle mizz pedry dish!"

62 - city in desert

"It's so quiet..."

"I know." Richard nodded. "It's felt like this ever since Mother left, up until-" He sighed. "But things are getting better. Isaac's been working with the people here, trying to keep things from getting too bad."

"They missed me?"

"Very much. Grandfather blames himself for what Father did, and regrets that it got so far. Believe me, we would have gotten in touch sooner, but-"

"I know." He never understood why Mother never let him even speak to his father's kin, never mind even write. At first, he resented it, but now he couldn't really blame her...

63 - ice cream truck

Ryan nodded, scowling. "If Fontaine had any men of his left topside, it seems that they've gone to ground."

Jack glanced back at the girls, all engrossed in their treats, and spoke more quietly.

"Do you think they'll give us trouble?"

"I doubt it. Fontaine would have kept anyone involved in the Little Sister project close, probably by fear or fortune. If they need ADAM, then they'll have to go back."

"Well, that's something, I guess... So, you're back?"

"Yes, if I'm going to help the children."

"And how did Tenenbaum take that?"

"I'm still alive, aren't I?"

64 - horse at beach

Lisa smiled as a breeze whispered across the lake. She knew England would be wonderful after New York, but this was paradise. Leaning against the warm rock, she closed her eyes-

"What is it now, Aldo?"

"I know you wanna look around, but your father-"

"Wants me to be safe. Come on, what could happen here? Besides, it's not like I'm alone..."

"Whaddaya mean-?"

Thornton sent water flying as he surfaced, bare-chested among other things. He rubbed the water out of his eyes, then spotted the pair. "Oh! Hello!"

Lisa smiled at Aldo. "You were saying?"

"Never mind..."

66 - tire swing

"So, whaddaya think?"

“It’s...” Bill smiled wider, if it was even possible. “It’s bloody amazing!”

Barb blushed. “Oh, it’s not much - just a few things me an’ a few of the girls threw together.”

He glanced around. They’d done a pretty good job; with the furniture and decorations (good, but not fancy), it looked like a home, but more importantly, it felt like one. One more step, and it’d be his...

She placed a hand on his shoulder, and he realized that he was seconds away from tears.

“Glad to be back?”

He smiled proudly. “You have no idea...”

67 - two people in a boat

"You know how they say golf's a nice walk ruined by a stupid white ball? I'm thinking fishing's like that - a brief moment of excitement screwed up by the fact that the damn fish won't bite!"

Lamont sighed. "Wainwright's dinner plans are definitely out."

"Thank God - from the sound of things, tonight was gonna be Fish-A-Palooza."

"Well, that's not entirely true - I heard there was going to be some crab in there."

Farley groaned, sinking back in his seat. "It's not that I hate fish, and call me an unwashed plebe, but what's wrong with a pizza?"

68 - lobster dinner

"What did you tell Wainwright?"

"The truth. When the news broke, I packed up and ran - didn't stop until I'd reached Chicago. Not proud of it, but-" Farley sighed dramatically. "What else is new?"

Lamont studied a piece of shell. "Still doesn't explain why you didn't come back."

"You think I would? Bastard went for Reinhardt - what if he tried to grab me? 'Sides, after a while, it wasn't like I could just pick up and go."

"You know, they bring people in for fake alibis..."

"And I wouldn't blame them-" He smiled. "If I was lying..."

69 - picture of heart in sand

The stick scratched across the sand, lines and shapes forming like ink on paper.

Ellie sat on the bench, waiting for - Flynn? Mr. Flynn? Bill? - to come get her.

This was just so weird, so wrong. Dad and Aunt Kristie were... gone, and it was because of-

No, it wasn't. That Flynn was wrong somehow, dangerous like a stray animal. This one was more like, well, a grownup.

Like Batman, really. Except Batman never smiled or did much, really, except running around fighting crime and acting serious-

"Ellie?" Quiet, calm, human, and she feels safe. "Time to go."
