#78 - White

Okay, yeah, just for the record, docsgirl? I'm not quite sure whether or not this was inspired by your "White". Right now, I'm kind of thinking not so much.

#78 - White

"We can't start over. If this is a mistake, it's forever, and... I don't want to hurt you. Not that way."

Tim stared at the screen in shock, watching months of indecision come to a hearbreaking end. As he watched, the woman who he'd known as long as he could remember and the man thought she would be with for the rest of her life separated, Xander regretful and Anya...

"I'm sorry. I am so sorry..."

Ever since Xander's proposal in "The Gift", Anya had acted strangely whenever the subject of the engagement came up, both on the show and in casual conversation, occasionally making excuses when she needed to, but more often than not just vanishing. It never got as bad as "I have a food in the oven", but all the dodgings and silence left him wondering just how bad things had gotten...

And now as Anya walked down the aisle in dress and veil, every inch a perfect bride even as her dreams of marital bliss shattered with each step she took, he knew.

His heart sank at the tone of her voice, the sound of her pretending that they hadn't just seen her heart being broken.

"Ahn... God, I don't know what to say..."

Anya was silent for a moment.

She didn't continue. He paused, then walked over to the bench, sitting and wrapping an arm around her. Almost imperceptibly, she allowed herself to sink into the hug.

"'S not your fault..."

Anya glanced up, the sadness fading a little, then leaned into the hug again.

"Thanks", she murmured quietly. She didn't say anything else.

She didn't need to.

Oh yeah, definitely not your basic happy ending...

That was really sweet. Sad, but sweet. Thank you.

Thank you.

(Actually, I think I'd originally planned to put this under "Green" and have it be a story about Anya's hilariously tacky bridesmaid dresses, but then docsgirl wrote her "White", and it came out like this...)

Yes, the bridesmaids' dresses could be their own storyline...

Having been a bridesmaid numerous times, I know that the large fabric rosette can't be blamed on Anya being a demon. :)
